Job Summary

Function: to help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment. The guidance counselor is responsible to the director of guidance and works in liaison with the building principal.

Duties

• Works to resolve students’ educational handicaps.
• Works to prevent students from dropping out of school.
• Works to discover and develop students’ special abilities.
• Guides students in their participation in school and community activities.
• Helps students evaluate career interests and choices.
• Confers, when appropriate, with school staff and parents.
• Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
• Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality.
• Aids student in course and subject selection.
• Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
• Provides information to agencies and potential employers according to provisions of the school committee’s policy on student records.
• Plans guidance field trips to schools and industry for interested discipline.
• Advises administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline.
• Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations.
• Utilizes appropriate school and community resources.
• Maintains a log of daily activities.
• Works closely with educational and service agencies.
• Prepares and submits reports concerning his/her program of services to the director of special education, building principal, and/or his/her designee.
• Assumes other guidance-related duties as may be assigned by the director of special education, building principal, and/or his/her designee.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree The applicant should have completed a full-time supervised internship in counseling. Guidance counselor’s certificate issued by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Three years of successful teaching experience at the secondary level Three years of experience as a school counselor, preferred
