Job Title: Full Time Bus Driver (180 Days) > Job Summary: Support and uphold the mission, vision and strategic goals of Aiken County Public Schools. Establish a safe, supportive, positive and productive environment. Under occasional supervision, drives and operates a school bus to transport students safely over specified routes established by and assigned by the Transportation Supervisor. > Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Must Pass Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Submit to Random Drug or Alcohol Testing

Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and submit to random drug or alcohol testing throughout tenure in accordance with federal and state guidelines for CDL holders.

Drive School Bus Safely and Professionally

Drives a school bus safely and professionally, demonstrating proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus.

Perform Daily Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections

Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections.

Comply with Traffic Ordinances and Operate Equipment

Complies with all traffic ordinances and operates equipment in accordance with district guidelines, state and federal laws/regulations.

Attend Scheduled Safety Meetings/In-Service

Attends scheduled safety meetings/in-services conducted by district transportation personnel and/or state transportation officials at various intervals throughout each school year.

Prepare and Maintain Accurate Reports

Prepares and maintains accurate reports assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.

Review and Comply with Requirements

Reviews and complies with the specific requirements and responsibilities, which are outlined in the State Department of Education’s School Bus Drivers Handbook along with Aiken County School District Handbook.

Communicate Effectively with Students, Parents, and Employees

Communicates in an appropriate fashion with students, parents, and employees.

Maintain Current Student Seating Charts and Contact Information

Maintain current and accurate student seating charts along with students updated contact information.

Ensure Proper Student Management

Ensure proper student management is in place to ensure safe school bus operations and submit student misconduct referrals to the Transportation Office.

Perform Practice Drills or Emergency Bus Evacuations

Performs practice drills or actual emergency bus evacuations as required.

Operate Two-Way Radio for Communication

Operates a two-way radio to maintain effective communication with schools and transportation.

Provide Written Reports of Road Hazards

Provides written reports of road hazards on assigned routes.

Maintain Clean Bus and Report Vandalism or Equipment Failures

Maintains a clean bus and reports any vandalism or equipment failures to supervisor.

Perform Other Duties as Assigned

Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, Assistant Director, or Director. > Job Specifications:

Education and/or Experience

At least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred, valid driver’s license and at least 12 months licensed driving experience with a Class D, E, F, or G license. Must have no more than four (4) current points against driving record. Must have had no more than 4 points in the previous year. License shall not have been suspended at any time in the previous year.

Physical Examination Required

Physical examination required prior to initial certification and/or re-certification. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and a School Bus Driver Certificate. Must obtain and keep a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises students while transporting them. Administers first aid when needed.

Language Skills

Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Physical Demands

Must maintain a passing score on a physical performance test (PPT), as mandated by the SC State Department of Education. > Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100°F and below 32°F and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.
