Job Summary
The Adjunct Instructor, ESL is a part-time, non-benefited position that delivers high-quality instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) to a diverse population of non-native English speakers. This role supports students in developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills aligned with program standards and learning objectives.
Skills
• Strong instructional skills with the ability to plan, deliver, and assess effective ESL lessons.
• Ability to scaffold instruction and differentiate learning for varied English proficiency levels.
• Skilled in integrating reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.
• Proficiency in using educational technology, such as Canvas, Google Workspace, Zoom, and ESL-specific tools (e.g., Quizlet, Kahoot).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills tailored to diverse learner populations.
• Time management and organizational skills to balance instruction, grading, and communication.
Essential Functions
• This position is non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative; other duties may be assigned.
Primary Responsibility of Faculty
At LCCC, we seek instructors who are committed to excellence in teaching as demonstrated in the competency domains outlined below. Faculty are expected to continually grow towards excellence in the following outcomes in the designated discipline of English as a Second Language (ESL).
Teaching and Learning
• Employ student-centered instruction coupled with the development and use of appropriate and current educational materials.
• Consistently and promptly respond to student inquiries and share timely, appropriate, and instructive feedback and evaluation of student work.
• Maximize student engagement and success by employing methods that develop student understanding of the values, practice, and procedures within the designated discipline, and by engaging students in interdisciplinary practices to develop 21st-century learners.
• Prepare and deliver assigned courses by employing high-impact teaching practices in a learning environment that promotes respect and rapport.
• Facilitate student achievement by maintaining clear expectations and defined learning outcomes.
• Promote learning through the innovative implementation of effective classroom technologies.
Competency-Based Design
• Apply competency-based design to the development of curriculum, engaging with colleagues at the course, program, and institutional level with the aim of continuous improvement.
• Evaluate student engagement and success through formative and summative assessment.
• Develop curriculum by articulating measurable, student-centered learning outcomes, and using competency-based design strategy to maintain curriculum that is current, effective, and relevant to the designated discipline.
• Contribute to curricula by assisting in design, implementation, and review aligned with current or emerging community, state, or national needs.
• Participate in continuous improvement of student learning and success by gathering data, analyzing data, engaging with peers and internal and external stakeholders, and implementing change as a result.
Professionalism
• Collaborate and actively reflect on responsibilities to positively contribute to one’s discipline, pathway, the college, and the greater community.
• Maintain professionalism by embodying the values, ethics, and behavior codes of LCCC and one’s discipline.
• Demonstrate social competence and effective communication in professional and academic venues.

Knowledge
• Thorough understanding of second language acquisition theories and instructional strategies.
• Familiarity with ESL curriculum standards and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
• Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and adult learning principles.
• Awareness of issues affecting English language learners and literacy development.
• Understanding of assessment tools for measuring English language proficiency.
• Proficiency with educational technology and digital tools for language instruction.
Abilities
• Ability to establish a supportive and engaging classroom environment.
• Ability to adapt instructional methods based on student needs and feedback.
• Capacity to build rapport and communicate effectively with non-native English speakers.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a department or team.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective teaching practice.
• Ability to encourage student accountability.
Physical/Mental Demands
• There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
• While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
• There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
• An employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
• The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics, Education, English, TESOL, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of one year of successful ESL teaching experience in adult education, middle school, or high school.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, Education, English, TESOL, or related field.
• Experience teaching in a community college or adult education setting.
• Familiarity with ESL assessment frameworks.
• Bilingual or multilingual skills.
