Job Title: Smile Club Advisor - Position Overview: - The University of Rhode Island's smile clubs meet weekly throughout the school year for integrated math and science activities designed to build a cohort of interested and excited students. Each club accommodates about 20 students and is facilitated by two of the school's teachers. Clubs also take several field trips per year and attend the smile program's annual special events. - Early Intervention: - Early intervention is key to students' success and provides the rationale for smile programming to start in the fourth grade. Student involvement may continue through 12th grade. - Creating a Pathway to Higher Education: - By maintaining the continuity of students' exposure to and support for learning science and math, we are creating a clear pathway to higher education for motivated and prepared students. - More Information: - More info on smile can be found here: https://web.uri.edu/smile/ - Essential Duties & Responsibilities: - Supervision & Facilitation - Attend and supervise regular smile meetings, events, and activities. - Establish a supportive club environment. - Ensure that activities during club time promote gender equity and are culturally appropriate. - Establish a club culture where good behavior is expected, self-esteem and self-confidence are enhanced, and promoting student resiliency remains an important goal. - Smile students are encouraged to work hard, develop their skills and talents, and explore their interests. - Students participate in teams and learn that it is ok and fun to be smart. - Involves family and community by using positive adult role models from the community and providing a connection to school that is both social and academic. - Managing the URI Provided Club Budget - Manage the URI provided club budget. - Attending Professional Development - Attend UR professional development that supports club advisors academically with curriculum. - Club Advisors' Workshops - During the workshops, teachers share curriculum ideas, plan for the year, learn how to prepare the students for the upcoming college-connection events, and renew their own wonderment in learning. - Required Qualifications: - Meet URI smile club advisor/teacher requirements. - Preferred Qualifications: - Experience as a club advisor, preferred. - Strong science background, preferred. - Bachelor's degree, preferred.
